What another busy week in squirrels class this week. We have engaged in lots of new learning and continue to embed positive behaviour and expectations.
Maths
In maths, this week we have been looking at representing numbers and finding one more and one less. The children started the week by using different concrete resources to represent different numbers to 10, some challenged themselves further by looking at how we can show 10 in different ways. Next we looked at finding one more and how the number gets greater then compared this to finding one less and how the number gets smaller. Amazing work and a great understanding shown!
English
In English, this week the children have focused on writing a retell of Oliver's vegetables. We started the week off looking at a WAGOLL to find the key features. We then moved on to creating a story map to help us sequence the events we would be writing about. To end the week we looked at proper nouns and how we would need to use these in our writing. We will be continuing this fantastic learning sequence next week and complete our FIRST published write.

Maths
In maths this week, the children started the week with a focus on counting forwards and backwards 1-10. During this learning we looked at how we represent number in different way from words to pictorial. We ended the week by looking at how objects can be sorted e.g. colour, size, object and we also focused on 1-2-1 correspondence when counting.
English
In English this week, the children have been introduced to our new class text 'Oliver's vegetables'. We used talk4writing this week to introduce the text, starting by reading the story and adding some actions to support our recall. Next, we explored the different vegetables and collectively created word banks of adjectives to describe each vegetable. We used these word banks to look at how adjectives are used within writing and applied this into simple sentences. We took inspiration from a list poem this week to help us with out writing.
Afternoon learning
This week we have introduced all of our new learning for this half term. The children particularly enjoyed our very first Spanish lesson, we started off simple with greeting and by the end of the lesson the children could have a very simple conversation using simple phrases. Lots of repetition was helpful as the children were able to focus on pronunciation.
The Monarchy
This half term we will be taking some time learn all about the monarchy to create a scrapbook for such a significant in all our lives. This week we started our learning by learning about some significant monarchs and placing them in chronological order on a timeline. The children have now begun to understand how to order dates and their recall of the different monarchs was AMAZING! We then moved on to looking at 'The role of a monarch', the children took some time to imagine what life would be like if they were monarch for a day. As a class we collectively created a set of rules that we might set if we were a monarch. The children were great at remembering these has to be fair and good for their country.

What a fantastic first week we have had in Year 1 Squirrels! The children have all settled in well and I am really looking forward to the year ahead of us. We have introduced new rules and routines that children are understanding and beginning to follow. Year 1 will be full of new learning and experiences with lots of fun along the way We have also introduced 'Trackit lights' which we have done lots of learning about. I'm sure the children will be able to tell you all about it! We also spent this week learning how to use our iPads and we cannot wait to learn more as we progress throughout the year. At the end of the week we refreshed our knowledge of 'pants is private' so we can keep ourselves safe and got to know which colour house team we are in.
