This week in Nursery, we continued our exciting journey into this term’s topic: “Let’s Travel!” Our focus has been all about the airport—what a busy and imaginative week it has been! We introduced the delightful book “At the Airport,” which gave the children a clear and engaging insight into what we might see, hear, and do when visiting an airport. We also watched a range of videos showing real-life airport experiences—these helped to bring the learning to life and sparked lots of questions and curiosity among the children!
Our little travellers have been busily getting ready for their imaginary holidays. The children designed and created their very own passports, carefully using a range of materials and tools. The children wrote their name, age and drew a picture of their face! They also practiced their cutting skills while packing their suitcases with essentials—an activity that supported fine motor development and encouraged independent decision-making.
In small groups, the children worked together to sequence numbers from 1 to 5, using themselves to represent the numbers! It was lovely to see them cooperate and communicate as they took turns and supported one another to stand in the correct order. Such teamwork! To support name recognition and early writing skills, the children wrote their own names on postcards—just like you would send from a holiday! They used a variety of writing tools including pencils, coloured pencils, and pens, which gave them the opportunity to experiment with different grips and techniques. We placed a strong focus on communication and language development this week. The children used discussion cards to share what they already know about airports and travelling, as well as what they imagine happens. It was lovely to hear them using new vocabulary from our topic in such confident and meaningful ways. Their ideas were both imaginative and insightful!
In the provision the children loved the themed areas. The small world airport and travel agents role-play areas were especially popular, allowing children to consolidate their learning through imaginative play. At the fine motor area, they used play dough to shaped their own aeroplanes and used transport-themed stampers—brilliant for developing those important fine motor skills. In our maths area, the children matched numerals to quantities, filling their "suitcases" with the correct number of items. Water play was a big hit again this week, building on last week’s focus on transport. The children matched coloured boats with coloured bear passengers and practiced careful counting as they loaded them on. Using a laundry line, the children used pegs to hang up their holiday clothes—another great activity for fine motor strength! We also explored ramps using different types of transport toys to investigate speed and motion. The children loved predicting and observing how fast or slow the vehicles travelled down the ramp.
Father’s Day Celebration
We ended the week with a truly special event—our Father’s Day Celebration on Friday morning. It was a joy to welcome dads, grandads, uncles, and brothers into our setting. The children proudly sang two beautiful songs and then spent time with their special guests enjoying a range of fun and engaging activities: finger painting, storytelling, beard shaving role play, construction building, colouring and dancing. It was a morning full of love and laughter, and we could see just how much the children enjoyed sharing this precious time with their loved ones.
