What a fantastic final week of the Summer 1 term we have had in Year 1! The classroom has been full of excitement as Squirrels wrapped up their learning across all their subjects. Have a look at what the children have been up to:

Writing: Tidy by Emily Gravett

Inspired by the book 'Tidy' by Emily Gravett, the children stepped into the muddy paws of Pete the badger! After thinking about the importance of looking after nature, the children wrote heartfelt letters as Pete, asking visitors to the forest to help keep it clean and beautiful. We were so impressed by how persuasive and thoughtful the letters were — the children should be so proud!

Maths: Fractions - Recognising and Finding a Half

This week in maths, Squirrels explored fractions, focusing on halves. The children practised recognising and finding one half of shapes, objects, and quantities. From cutting cakes to sharing sweets evenly, Year 1 did an amazing job understanding how to split things into two equal parts!

Science: Everyday Materials - Cooking and Burning

In Science, the children explored what happens when materials are cooked. Squirrels thought about what changes they can see and whether those changes can be undone. Looking at how toast and cakes are made, this sparked lots of curiosity and some very sensible discussions about heat, safety, and irreversible changes.

History: Stories of Rulers - Mansa Musa

This week in History, the children learnt about Mansa Musa, a famous king from Mali in Africa. He ruled a long time ago and was known for being very rich, wise and kind. The children discovered that Mansa Musa used his gold to help people, to build schools and libraries, and to make his kingdom a better place. The children loved hearing about his long journey and how he shared his wealth with others. The children talked about what makes a good ruler, and they agreed that Mansa Musa was a great example!

Geography: Living by the Sea - Staying Safe at the Seaside

This week in Geography, Squirrels learnt how to stay safe at the seaside. The children talked about seaside hazards including deep water, cliff edges and high tides. They explored how to stay safe by swimming near a lifeguard, looking out for warning flags, never going into the water alone and staying away from steep cliff edges. Squirrels shared great ideas and showed they understand how to enjoy the beach safely and sensibly!

Design and Technology: Making a Moving Monster!

In Design and Technology this week, Squirrels created their very own moving monsters using levers and linkages! The children designed colourful, imaginative creatures and learnt how to make parts move by using simple mechanisms.

We are so proud of everything the children have achieved this half term. Thank you to all families for your continued support. We hope you have a restful and fun half-term break – we cannot wait to see what the final term of Year 1 brings!
